Annie Besant is an English socialist, anarchist, women's rights activist, writer, speaker, educator and philanthropist. Considered a champion of human freedom, she is a staunch defender of the autonomy of Ireland and India. She is a wealthy author with over three hundred recorded books and booklets. As an educator, she notably helped to become one of the founders of the Hindu University of Banaras. In 1867 Annie, at the age of 20, married Frank Besant, a missionary, and they had two children. However, Annie's increasingly unique religious position led to their legal secession in 1873. She later became a popular speaker for the National Secular Society, as well as a writer and close friend of Charles Bradlaugh. In 1877, they were charged with publishing a book by birth control activist Charles Knowlton. The scandal made them famous and Bradlaugh was later elected congressman. for Northampton in 1880 .
