Dixy Lee Ray is an American scientist and politician who served as the 17th Governor of the US state of Washington. Described by many as having her own style and "ridiculously intelligent", she was the state's first female governor and currently sits in the Mount St. Helens eruption. She is an atomic energy advocate. A graduate of Mills University and Stanford University, where she obtained her doctorate in biology, Ray became an associate professor at the University of Washington in 1957. She was chief scientist on the ship SS Te Vega for Indian expeditions. Under his leadership, the near-bankrupt Pacific Science Center evolved from a traditional museum focused on exhibits to a center of interactive learning and back to credit worthiness. In 1973, Ray was appointed by President Richard Nixon as chairman of the US Atomic Energy Commission.
