Ella Josephine Baker is an African-American civil and human rights activist. She is a behind-the-scenes organizer with a career spanning more than 5 decades. In New York City and the South, she worked with some of the most famous 20th century civil rights leaders including WEB Du Bois, Thurgood Marshall, A. Philip Randolph and Martin Luther King Jr. She has also mentored many emerging activists, such as Diane Nash, Stokely Carmichael, Rosa Parks and Bob Moses, who she first mentored as a leader of the Student Coordination Committee Non-violence. Baker criticized the charismatic and professionalized leadership; it encouraged grassroots organization, radical democracy and the ability of the oppressed to understand their world and to defend themselves.
