Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham was a Guyanese politician and leader of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana from 1964 until his death. He was prime minister from 1964 to 1980, then first executive president from 1980 to 1985. He is often considered a strong man who accepts his own version of communism. During his presidency, he encouraged Guyan to produce and export more local products, in particular through the use of state companies and agricultural cooperatives. Although considered by many to be one of the main architects of the postcolonial state of Guyana, his presidency has been tarnished by numerous accusations of government sanctions, economic downturn, electoral fraud and corruption in Africa.
