George Cram Cook
George Cram Cook or Jig Cook is an American theater producer, director, playwright, novelist, poet and professor. Believing his personal mission to inspire others, Cook led the formation of the players from Provincetown to Cape Cod in 1915; Their "creative collective" is considered America's first modern theater company. During his seven years with the group, Cook oversaw the production of nearly a hundred new plays by fifty American playwrights. He is particularly famous for producing the first plays by Eugene O'Neill, as well as that of Cook's wife, Susan Glaspell, and several other prominent writers. While teaching English literature at the University of Iowa between 1896 and 1899, Cook also taught what was supposed to be the first creative writing course. Entitled “Verse Making,” the course was continued by Cook's colleagues at college after he left. It wasn't until the 1950s that the Iowa Writers' Workshop was established.
