Abdullah Abdullah is an Afghan politician who heads the High Council for National Reconciliation, which is supposed to lead Afghanistan's internal peace negotiations with the Taliban. He was Executive Director of the United Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan from September 2014 to March 2020. From October 2001 to April 2005 he was Minister of Foreign Affairs. Previously, he was a senior member of the Northern Union as an advisor to Ahmad Shah Massoud. He was also a doctor in the late 1990s. Abdullah ran against President Hamid Karzai in the 2009 Afghan presidential election, finishing second with 30.5% of the total vote. In 2010, he formed the Coalition of Change and Hope, one of the main democratic opposition movements in Afghanistan. In 2011, the alliance was transformed into the Afghan National Coalition.
