Benjamin Robertson "Ben" Harney is an American musician, artist and pioneer of ragtime music. His 1895 work "You were a good old wagon but you went bankrupt" is considered one of the earliest works of ragtime, but if he is proud of himself as the inventor of ragtime, he " certainly not." While perhaps more related to Scott Joplin now, in 1924 the New York Times wrote that Ben Harney "probably did more work to spread ragtime than anyone else." Time magazine called him "Father of Ragtime" in 1938 .
