Donald Lewes Hings, a Canadian inventor, was born in Leicester, UK. In 1937 he created a mobile radio signaling system for his company CM&S, which he called "packset", but later called "Walkie-Talkie". While Hings filed a US patent for the package in Spokane, Washington in 1939, Canada declared war on Germany. CM&S sent Hings to Ottawa to redevelop his new invention for military use, and he worked there from 1940 to 1945. During these years, he developed several models, including the successful C-58 radios, eventually sold eighteen thousand built to infantry and he was awarded the MBE Award. 1946 and the Order of Canada in 2001. After the war, he moved to Burnaby, British Columbia, where he founded an electronic research and development company, Electronic Labs of Canada. He continued to research and innovate in communications and geophysics until his retirement.
