McCallion was first elected in November 1978 and is the longest-serving mayor in the city's history, having served 36 years upon his retirement in 2014. She was elected as a candidate in twelve city elections, after being welcomed twice and re-elected ten more times. His supporters nicknamed him "Hurricane Hazel" because of his blunt political style.
