Kornelia Ender is a former East German swimmer who, at the 1976 Summer Olympics, became the first swimmer to win four gold medals in one Olympics, all in record time. It was later demonstrated that the doctors of the East German team systematically administered steroids to their athletes. When she had symptoms of steroid use in 1976, strong doubts were raised about the validity of Ender's achievements. Ender trained from a young age and won his first Olympic medal at the age of 13 at the 1972 Olympics in Munich: three silver medals, including one in the individual 200m, behind Shane Gould who Australia. Over the next few years, she broke 32 world records in individual events, including four at the Montreal Olympics. In 1991, she answered long-standing doubts about her physical condition at the 1976 Olympics, admitting that the team doctors and coaches had given her multiple injections in the previous months.
