Joseph Maxwell Cleland is an American politician from Georgia. Cleland, a Democrat, is a disabled US Army veteran during the Vietnam War, who received a Silver Star and a Bronze Star for his courageous actions in combat, and is former US Senator. He is also the director of Veterans Affairs. From 2003 to 2007, he served on the board of the US Export Import Bank, a position appointed by the President. From 2009 to 2017, he served as secretary of the United States Battlefield Remnants Commission. After his defeat in 2002, no Georgian Democrats were elected to full terms in the US Senate for 18 years until Jon Ossoff, who won Cleland's former seat within two in five. 2021 before incumbent Republican David Perdue.
