Maxi Gnauck is a retired gymnastics athlete who represents East Germany. With a total of 27 medals at the Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup and European Championships, she is considered one of the most successful female gymnasts ever produced by Germany. In 1980, she was chosen as the sports figure of the year in East Germany. Her parents are expecting a boy and plan to call him Max, so when the baby becomes a girl, they just add an "i", which makes a name unusual in Germany. When Maxi was five, her mother took her to a gym in their area. At the age of 8, Maxi won his first medal at the Kreisspartakiade. At the age of nine, she changed clubs to SC Dynamo Berlin, where she was coached by Jurgen Heritz. Considered one of the best irregular bar contestants of all time, Maxi is also an outstanding athlete. She was one of the first female gymnasts to perform a triple swing on the floor.
