He was born and raised in Alton, Illinois, a small town near St. John's. Louis, Missouri. Wadlow's height was 8 feet 11.1 inches while his weight reached 439 pounds when he died at the age of 22. Its enormous size and constant growth into adulthood is caused by an enlarged pituitary gland, leading to abnormally high levels of growth hormone in humans. Even before his death, there was no indication that his development was complete.
