Duvall started his career in the 1970s, appearing in various films directed by Robert Altman, including Brewster McCloud, McCabe & Mrs Miller, Thieves Like Us and Nashville. She made a breakthrough with the horror film 3 Women, also directed by Altman, which she was highly regarded by critics, receiving the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress and a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Actress. She also has a supporting role in Annie Hall. In the 1980s, Duvall starred as Olive Oyl in Altman's Popeye and Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick's horror film The Shining.
