Alexander Hamilton Stephens was an American politician who served as Vice President of the Union of Nations from 1861 to 1865, then as the 50th Governor of Georgia from 1882 until his death that year. 1883. As a member of the Democratic Party, he represented Georgia in the United States House of Representatives before becoming governor. Stephens attended Franklin College and founded a law firm in his hometown of Crawfordville, Georgia. After serving in both houses of the Georgia General Assembly, he won the congressional elections, taking his seat in 1843. It became one of the main Southern Whig parties and firmly opposed the Mexican-American War. . After the war, Stephens was a prominent supporter of the Compromise of 1850 and helped draft the Georgia Platform, Opposed to Secession. As a supporter of the expansion of slavery into the Territories, Stephens also helped pass the Kansas-Nebraska law.
