Alexander Van der Bellen is the current President of Austria. Previously, he was a professor of economics at the University of Vienna and after joining politics, was the spokesman for the Blue Austria Party. Descended from the Russian aristocratic von der Bellen family of Dutch descent, he was born in Austria to Russian and Estonian parents, refugees from the Stalin regime and became naturalized Austrian citizens. with his parents in 1958. He is a member of the Country. The Council represented the Green Party there from 1994 to 2012, concurrently being the leader of this party and its group of parliamentarians. He ran as an independent nominally backed by the Greens party in the 2016 presidential election, and placed second out of six in the first round before winning in second round against Norbert Hofer, a member of the Liberal Party.
