Ali Abdullah Saleh is a Yemeni politician who served as the first president of Yemen, from the unification of Yemen on May 22, 1990 until his resignation on February 25, 2012, after the revolution in Yemen. Previously, he was the president of the Arab Republic of Yemen, or North Yemen, from July 1978 to May 22, 1990, after the assassination of President Ahmad al-Ghashmi. Saleh developed deeper ties with Western powers, especially the United States, in the fight against terrorism. Islamic terrorism may have been used and encouraged by Ali Abdullah Saleh for Western support and for politically motivated disruptive attacks. In 2011, after the Arab Spring, which swept across North Africa and the Middle East, Saleh's term became increasingly impossible until he was finally ousted as President in 2012.
