He was defeated by the incumbent Republican Senator. Jim DeMint with a margin of 61.46% to 27.65%. He was the first African-American appointed to the US Senate by a major party in South Carolina. Greene is notable for doubts among his party members about the legitimacy of the 2010 preliminary victory, for "bizarre and well-documented behavior during the election campaign", for the attention The media opinion he received and for pursuing 2010 Senate bid despite being indicted. He also ran for Parliament in a special election in February 2011, with 37 votes.
