Born in Palo Alto, California to actors Jules Irving and Priscilla Pointer, Irving spent her youth in San Francisco before her family moved to New York City as a teenager. In New York City, she debuted on Broadway in The Country Wife at the age of 13. Irving then studied acting at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco and the London Academy of Theater Arts and Music before making his film debut in Brian De Palma's Carrie. starred in the 1978 supernatural thriller The Fury. In 1980, Irving appeared in the Broadway production Amadeus before being cast as Yentl, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
