Arthur Scargill is a member of the British union. He was president of the National Coalition of Mining Workers from 1982 to 2002. Joining NUM at the age of 19 in 1957, he became one of the organization's leading activists in the late 1960s. He led an informal strike in 1969 and played a key organizer role in strikes in 1972 and 1974, which later contributed to the downfall of Edward Heath's Conservative government. A decade later, he led the union in the miners' strike of 1984-1985, a milestone in the history of the British labor movement. It turned into a fierce confrontation with the Conservative government of Margaret Thatcher's, in which the coalition of miners was defeated. Once a member of the Labor Party, he is today the party leader of the Socialist Labor Party he founded in 1996
