Bayard Rustin
Bayard Rustin is an American leader in civil rights, socialism, nonviolence and gay rights social movements. Rustin worked with A. Philip Randolph during the March on Washington movement in 1941 to advocate for an end to racism in employment. Rustin then hosted the Freedom Rides and helped host the Southern Catholic Leadership Conference to strengthen Martin Luther King Jr.'s leadership role. and teach King about nonviolence; he later acted as the organizer of The Action for Washington for Work and Freedom. Rustin worked with Ella Baker, co-director of the Civil Rights Crusade, in 1954; and before the Montgomery bus boycott, he helped organize a group, known as "In Friendship", consisting of Baker, George Lawrence, Stanley Levison of the US Jewish Congress, and several other union leaders. “In Friendship” has provided material and legal assistance to people evicted from their farms and households in Clarendon County, Yazoo and elsewhere.
