Robert Michael Gates is a US intelligence analyst and university president, he served as the 22nd Secretary of Defense of the United States from 2006 to 2011. He was originally appointed by President George W. Bush and is retained by President Barack Obama for duty. Gates began his career as an officer in the United States Air Force, but was quickly recruited by the Central Intelligence Service. Gates served 26 years for the CIA and the National Security Council, and as central intelligence director under President George H. W. Bush. After leaving the CIA, Gates became president of Texas A&M University and served on a number of boards. Gates was a member of the Iraqi Research Group, a bipartisan committee co-chaired by James A. Baker III and Lee H. Hamilton, studying the lessons of the Iraq war. Gates was appointed by Republican President George W. Bush as Secretary of Defense two years after the 2004 election, replacing Donald Rumsfeld.
