Robert Clayton Shantz is a former professional American baseball player. He played as a left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball from 1949 to 1964 and won the American League MVP award in 1952 as a member of the Philadelphia Track and Field. Three times the All-Star, Shantz has won eight consecutive Golden Gloves awards and won the World Series Championship alongside 1958 New York Yankees. He also plays for Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Colt 45, St.. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies. Shantz began his career as an early pitcher, but about half the way he switched to a capable relief pitcher. In 1951, he added knuckleball to his repertoire. At a mere 5-foot-6, Shantz has a career record with 119 wins, 99 losses and an average score of 3.38 points.
