Cecil John Rhodes was a British mining magnate and politician in southern Africa, serving as Prime Minister of the Cape Colony from 1890 to 1896. A staunch supporter of British imperialism, Rhodes and the British South Africa Company established the Southern-African Territory from Rhodesia, company named after him in 1895. The University of Rhodes in South Africa is also named after him. Rhodes establishes the conditions of the Rhodes scholarship, funded by his fortune. He also went to great lengths to realize his vision of a Cape to Cairo railway across British territory. Son of a priest, Rhodes was born at Netteswell House, Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire. He's a sick child. He was sent to South Africa by his family at the age of 17 in the hope that the climate could improve his health. He started the diamond business in Kimberley in 1871, when he was 18, and for the next two decades he almost completely dominated the world diamond market.
