Chaim Azriel Weizmann is a Russian-born biochemist, Jewish patriotic leader, and Israeli politician who served as president of the Patriotic Organization and later as the first president of the country. Israel. He was elected on February 16, 1949 and served until his death in 1952. It was Weizmann who persuaded the US government to recognize the new State of Israel. As a biochemist, Weizmann is considered the “father” of industrial fermentation. He developed acetone-butanol-ethanol fermentation and produced acetone, n-butanol and ethanol by bacterial fermentation. His method of producing acetone was of great importance in the production of cordite explosives for the British war industry during WWI. He founded the Sieff Research Institute in Rehovot, Israel and was the foundation of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
