Charles Bent
Charles Bent is an American businessman and politician who served as the first civilian governor of the New Mexico Territory, recently acquired by Military Governor Stephen Watts Kearny, in September 1846. Bent has worked as a local fur trader since 1828, with his younger brother, William, then his partner Ceran St. Vrain. Although his office is in Santa Fe, Bent retained his residence and a trading post in present-day Taos, New Mexico Territory. On January 19, 1847, Bent was shot down by Pueblo warriors and killed during the Taos Rebellion.
