Charles Wesley was an English leader of the Methodist movement, best known for writing over 6,500 hymns. Charles Wesley was born in Epworth, Lincolnshire, the son of Anglican chaplain and poet Samuel Wesley and wife Susanna. He is the brother of Methodist founder John Wesley and Anglican missionary Samuel Wesley the Younger, and he becomes the father of musician Samuel Wesley and grandfather of musician Samuel Sebastian Wesley. He trained at Oxford where his brothers also studied, and he founded "Holy Club" among his teammates in 1729. John Wesley later joined this group, too, and so did George Whitefield. . Charles followed his father and brother to church in 1735, and he traveled with John to Georgia in America, returning a year later. After converting to evangelism in 1738, the Wesley brothers traveled all over England, converting Methodists to a Methodist renaissance through preaching and hymn singing.
