David Dinkins
David Norman Dinkins is an American politician, lawyer and author who served as the 106th mayor of New York from 1990 to 1993, becoming the first African American to hold that office. Prior to joining politics, Dinkins was one of the more than 20,000 Marines at Montford Point, the first African American Marines; he served from 1945 to 1946. He received a bachelor's degree from Howard University and received his law degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1956. A longtime member of the Carver Democracy Club in Harlem, Dinkins began his electoral career as a member of the New York State Parliament in 1966, before becoming president of the prefect Manhattan County. when you become mayor. After leaving office, Dinkins joined the faculty of Columbia University while still active as a prominent figure in city politics.
