Emil Jannings is a German actor, famous in the 1920s in Hollywood. He was the first person to receive an Oscar for Best Actor for his roles in The Last Command and The Way of All Flesh. Since 2021, Jannings is the only German to win this category. Jannings is best known for his collaborations with F. W. Murnau and Josef von Sternberg, including 1930s The Blue Angel, with Marlene Dietrich. The Blue Angel was seen as a way for Jannings to gain a foothold in the new sound film, but Dietrich stole the show. Jannings went on to star in several Nazi propaganda films, which left him unemployed as an actor after the fall of the Third Reich.
