Felipe González Márquez is a Spanish lawyer, teacher and politician who was General Secretary of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party from 1974 to 1997 and 3rd Prime Minister of Spain. Spain since its democratic restoration, from 1982 to 1996. He remains the prime minister with the longest elected post in Spain. González joined the PSOE in 1964, when it was banned under the French regime. He obtained his law degree at the University of Seville in 1965. In 1974, the PSOE elected González as general secretary after a split at its 26th Congress. Following Franco's death and the onset of transition to democracy in Spain, González won a seat in the General Assembly after leading the PSOE to run for the 1977 general election, but to lost to Adolfo Suárez.
