Frederick Tecumseh "Dash" Waite, sometimes spelled Fred Wayte, was noted during his time as a cowboy in New Mexico and a member of the Billy the Kid gang. He is also known as the last legislator of the Chickasaw Nation government and as its attorney general. As a young man, Waite left Indian Territory to work as a herdsman in the New Mexico Territory. While working for John Tunstall as a breeder, he met Bill Bonney and several other men. After Tunstall was killed in the Lincoln County War, Bonney, Waite and the others chased Tunstall's murderers as vigilants, calling themselves the Steward. When moving into criminal activities, they became known as the "Billy the Kid gang". In 1880, at about 27 years old, Waite left the gang and returned to Chickasaw Nation to build a sedentary life. He married, became a breeder and started a family. After that, he lived a law-abiding life and became involved in the politics of Choctaw and Chickasaw.
