Horace Greeley
Horace Greeley is an American newspaper editor and publisher who founded and edited the New-York Tribune. Politically active, he briefly served as a member of Congress from New York and was the unsuccessful New Liberal candidate in the 1872 presidential election against the incumbent president. Ulysses S. Grant, who won. Greeley was born into a poor family in Amherst, New Hampshire. He apprenticed as a printer in Vermont and went to New York in 1831 in search of property. He wrote or edited several publications and became involved in Whig Party politics, making an important contribution to William Henry Harrison's successful presidential campaign in 1840. The following year, he founded the Tribune, which became the most widely distributed newspaper in the country thanks to weekly postal publications. Among many other issues, he called for the colonization of the Old American Quarter, which he saw as a land of opportunity for the young and the unemployed.
