Irving Langmuir
Irving Langmuir is an American chemist, physicist and engineer. He received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1932 for his work on surface chemistry. Langmuir's most famous publication is his 1919 article "The Arrangement of Electrons in Atoms and Molecules", which, based on the theory of cubic atoms of Gilbert N. Lewis and the theory of chemical bonds of Walther Kossel, described his "concentric theory of atomic structure". Langmuir was embroiled in a high priority labor dispute with Lewis; Langmuir's skill in presentation was largely responsible for the dissemination of the theory, although the contribution to the theory has been largely attributed to Lewis. During his time at General Electric from 1909 to 1950, Langmuir advanced in several areas of physics and chemistry, inventing gas-filled incandescent lamps and hydrogen welding techniques.
