James Goodall Francis, Australian colonial politician, is Victoria's ninth prime minister. Francis was born in London and immigrated to Van Diemen's Land in 1847, where he became an entrepreneur. He moved to Victoria in 1853 and became one of Melbourne's leading merchants. He was director of the Bank of New South Wales and chairman of the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce. He is married to Mary Ogilvie and has eight sons and seven daughters.
