Margaret Jane Pauley is an American journalist, television presenter and author, active in the field of reporting since 1972. Pauley was widely known to be Barbara Walters' successor for the first time. On the NBC Today Morning show, which begins at the age of 25, where she was co-anchor from 1976 to 1989, first with Tom Brokaw, then with Bryant Gumbel; for a brief period in the late 1980s, she and Gumbel worked with Deborah Norville. In 1989 her job seemed threatened by Norville's joining the program, she asked to be removed from the contract and her application was granted. Her next regular adviser position was at the network's Dateline NBC news magazine from 1992 to 2003, where she collaborated with Stone Phillips. In May 2003, she left NBC completely after 27 years with this network. She briefly hosted a one-day talk show of the same name from 2004 to 2005, but was unsuccessful and was quickly canceled.
