Jesse Helms
Jesse Alexander Helms Jr. is an American journalist, media operator and politician. As a leader in the conservative movement, he served as a senator for the state of North Carolina from 1973 to 2003. As chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 1995 to 2001, he had an important voice in foreign policy. Helms helped organize and fund the revival of the Tories in the 1970s, focusing on Ronald Reagan's mission to the White House and helping many local and regional candidates. Helms is the longest-serving popular senator in North Carolina history. It has been widely noted in transforming a one-party state into a competitive two-party state.
