John Bowden Connally Jr. is an American politician. He was the 39th Governor of Texas and the 61st Secretary of the United States Treasury. He started his career as a Democrat and then became a Republican in 1973. Born in Floresville, Texas, Connally pursued a career in law after graduating from the University of Texas at Austin. During World War II, he was on the payroll of James Forrestal and Dwight D. Eisenhower before being transferred to the Asia-Pacific Theater. After the war, he became an assistant to Senator Lyndon B. Johnson. When Johnson assumed the post of Vice President in 1961, he convinced President John F. Kennedy to appoint Connally as Secretary of the United States Navy. Connally left the Kennedy administration in December 1961 to run for governor of Texas, and he served from 1963 to 1969. In 1963, Connally sat in the presidential limousine during Kennedy's assassination and was heavily injured.
