John Kufuor
John Kofi Agyekum Kufuor GCB is a Ghanaian politician who served as President of Ghana from January 7, 2001 to January 7, 2009. He was also President of the African Union from 2007 to 2008. Kufuor's career was in the liberal-democratic aspect of Ghanaian politics, among the parties that emerged from the United Gold Coast Convention and the United Party. Lawyer and businessman, he served as minister in the government of the Progressive Party Kofi Abrefa Busia during the Second Republic of Ghana, and was the opposition leader of the Popular Front in the Third Republic. In the Fourth Republic, Kufuor ran as a New Patriotic Party candidate in the 1996 election, then led him to victory in 2000 and 2004. After serving two terms, five 2008, he resigned from politics.
