Jonas Sjöstedt is a Swedish politician who served as Chairman of the Left Party from 2012 to 2020 and is a former metal machinist. He has also been a member of the Swedish parliament since 2010. Sjöstedt was born in Gothenburg. He became politically active as a union leader in the Volvo plant in Umeå in the early 1990s. Despite Sweden's opposition to joining the European Union, he was elected as a member of the European Union. member of the European Parliament in 1995 for the Leftist Party as part of the United Left-Nordic Green Left European Left. He remained in this position until resigning in September 2006. He was elected a Member of the Swedish Parliament in 2010, representing Västerbotten.
