Jonathan Swift
Jonathan Swift is an Anglo-Irish satirist, essayist, political writer, poet and cleric, who became principal of St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, hence the popular nickname. of him, "Dean Swift". Swift is remembered for works like A Tale of a Tub, An Argument Against The Deviure Christian, Gulliver's Travels and A Modest Proposal. He is considered by the Encyclopædia Britannica to be the leading English satirist, and his poetry is little known. Initially, he published all his works under pseudonyms - such as Lemuel Gulliver, Isaac Bickerstaff, M. B. Drapier - or anonymously. He masters two styles of satire, the Horatian style and the Juvenalian style. His brevity, his sarcasm, especially in A Modest Proposal, led to such a satire which was later called "Swiftian".
