Madame Sul-Te-Wan has been an American actress in theater, film and television for over 50 years. The daughter of former slaves, she began her entertainment career touring the East Coast with various theater companies and moved to California to be part of the nascent film community. She is known as a character actress, appeared in popular films such as The Birth of a Nation and Intolerance, and easily turned to sound films. In 1986, she was inducted into the Black Filmmaker's Hall of Fame. Sul-Te-Wan is the first black actor to sign a film contract and is an outstanding artist.
