Martha Layne Collins is a former American businesswoman and politician from the Commonwealth of Kentucky; she was elected the 56th governor of the state between 1983 and 1987, the first woman to hold the post and the only person to date. Before that, she served as the 48th Governor of Kentucky, under John Y. Brown, Jr. Her election made her the highest democratic woman in the United States. presidential election, but Mondale chose Congressman Geraldine Ferraro instead. After graduating from the University of Kentucky, Collins worked as a teaching teacher while her husband completed his dental degree. She became interested in politics and worked in both Wendell Ford's campaign for governor in 1971 and Walter "Dee" Huddleston's US Senate campaign in 1972 .
