Brown, Jr. Her election made her the highest democratic woman in the United States. presidential election, but Mondale chose Congressman Geraldine Ferraro instead. After graduating from the University of Kentucky, Collins worked as a teaching teacher while her husband completed his dental degree. She became interested in politics and worked in both Wendell Ford's campaign for governor in 1971 and Walter "Dee" Huddleston's US Senate campaign in 1972 .
