Michael Stanley Dukakis is a retired American politician and lawyer, serving as the 65th Governor of Massachusetts from 1975 to 1979 and again from 1983 to 1991. He was the longest-serving governor in Massachusetts history and the second Greek-American governor in U.S. history, after Spiro Agnew. He was named president by the Democratic Party in the 1988 election, losing to the Republican candidate, Vice President George H. W. Bush. Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, to Greek and Aromanian immigrants, Dukakis attended Swarthmore College before enlisting in the United States military. After graduating from Harvard Law School, he was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives, serving from 1963 to 1971. He won the governorship of Massachusetts in 1974, but lost his candidacy in 1978 by Edward J. King. responsibility.
