McKean's breakout role was as villainous neighbor Lenny Kosnowski on the sitcom Laverne & Shirley. He played the role of David St. Hubbins, lead singer and lead co-guitarist of fictional rock band Spinal Tap in This Is Spinal Tap and has appeared in several Christopher Guest films. He co-wrote the song "A Mighty Wind", which won him a Grammy, as well as "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" in the same film, which was nominated for an Oscar for best original song. McKean was a member of Saturday Night Live for the 19th and 20th seasons in the mid-1990s
