Monica Puig Marchán is a professional tennis player from Puerto Rico and the reigning Olympic champion. She is also the Central American and Caribbean Champion and the Lien American Silver Medalist. She was the first Puerto Rican in history to win an Olympic gold medal to represent Puerto Rico. Turning professional in 2010, Puig has won two WTA singles titles and six ITF singles titles. On September 26, 2016, she reached the pinnacle of her career at the single, number 27 in the world. On May 25, 2015, she reached No. 210 in the doubles chart. At the Rio 2016 Olympics, Puig won the gold medal, the ninth overall medal at the Puerto Rico Games. Thanks to her exploits, she also became the first Latin American champion in women's singles and the only tennis player to win a gold medal since tennis returned in 1988
