Neal Dow
Neal Dow is a politician and advocate of the US ban. Nicknamed "Napoleon of Temperance" and "Father of the Prohibition", Dow was born into a Quaker family in Portland, Maine. From an early age, he believed that alcohol was the cause of many social problems and wanted to ban it by law. In 1850 Dow was elected president of the Maine Temperance Union and the following year, he was elected mayor of Portland. Soon after, largely through Dow's efforts, the state legislature banned the sale and production of alcohol under Maine law. Serving twice as the mayor of Portland, Dow enforces the law forcefully and calls for ever-tougher penalties for violators. In 1855 his opponents rebelled and he ordered the state militia to open fire on the crowd. A man was killed and several injured, and when the public reacted to the violence against Dow, he chose not to run for office.
