Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel was an American astronomer and major general during the American Civil War. A person of many talents, he is also a lawyer, investigator, professor and editor. He is known for having published the first American journal devoted to astronomy. Known in the Coalition Army as "The Old Stars", he was best known for ordering the raid to become known as the Great Locomotive Chase during the American Civil War.
