Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanaswami, commonly known as R. K. Narayan, is an Indian writer known for his work in the fictional town of Malgudi in southern India. He is the principal author of ancient Indian literature in English alongside Mulk Raj Anand and Raja Rao. Narayan's mentor and friend Graham Greene has been credited with calling the editors for Narayan's first four books, including the semi-autobiographical Swami and Friends trilogy, The Bachelor of Arts and The English Teacher. The fictional city of Malgudi was first introduced in Swami and Friends. Narayan's financial expert is hailed as one of the most original works of 1951, and Sahitya Academy's award-winning work, The Guide, has been adapted into film and for the Broadway stage. Narayan highlights the social context and the daily life of his characters. He has been compared to William Faulkner, who also created a similar fictional city and also explores the energy of ordinary life with humor and compassion.
