Samuel Shepard Rogers III is an American actor, playwright, author, screenwriter, and director with a career spanning half a century. He has won 10 Obie awards for writer and director, the most any writer or director has ever won. He has written 58 plays as well as a number of short stories, essays and memoirs. Shepard received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1979 for the play Buried Child and was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as pilot Chuck Yeager in the 1983. film The Right Stuff. PEN / Laura Pels Theater as the Master Playwright of America in 2009. New York Magazine described Shepard as "the greatest American playwright of his generation."
